About Me

Hey there! My name is David, and I’m excited to welcome you to Mainely Flour. Thanks for stopping by!

As a Maine native and avid home baker, I love developing and recreating recipes, especially celebrating some of the flavors that are so distinctive to my state and the New England region.

I’ve gained a lot of baking experience over the years and continue improving daily. Practice makes better, not perfect.

My goal when I make a recipe is to improve my technique, so I make mistakes, laugh them off, and learn from them.

Join me on this journey to building confidence in the kitchen. I promise you’ll have a good time in the process.

It all started when I was in the 6th grade. I would wake up early each morning to make a batch of muffins before going to school. I’d experiment with different ingredients, always searching for the next best flavor or improved texture. Fast forward to adulthood, I’ve graduated beyond muffins to make various goods.

I bake and/or cook almost daily, frequently hosting friends and family to test new recipes. From-scratch baking is my MO, but I reserve the right to use any ingredient that’ll yield a delicious result. Contact me if you have a question about a recipe I’ve shared or if you’d like to see a Maine/New England recipe shared on this site.

I Place Food on a Pedestal

As a child, I ate what was prepared for me. I was lucky that my mother and mémères [French Canadian for ‘grandmothers’] baked constantly, so there was always a variety of delicious things to sample. Outside of this, there were mainly grocery store bakeries to choose from, which is definitely not the same.

When I became an adult, I had an epiphany one day: I can bake whatever I want as long as I have the right equipment, information, and patience to figure a recipe out. This changed my LIFE.

I went through a lot of trial and error, and over time I developed the confidence to experiment and get creative. That’s why I created this blog.

I Quit My Job to Pursue My Passion

I was working as a Compliance Manager in higher education, and let me tell you–it was not as exciting as it sounds. [GASP!]

My entire day was spent sitting, my passion and energy draining with each project added to my plate. One day, I was placed in charge of implementing new Federal Motor Carrier standards for a Commercial Driver’s program, and I realized… I don’t care about any of this.

I longed to work for myself and focus my efforts where they matter most: my stomach. One of my favorite things is to share a delicious recipe, and even better–make it for friends and family (and also eat my fair share). Thus, Mainely Flour was born as a way to cultivate a sense of community and share what I’ve created with you all. The name is inspired by my home state, but it also is a simple message: each recipe mainly revolves around flour in some way, my favorite ingredient.

I Have a Life Too, You Know

I live in Southern Maine by a beautiful pond with my partner of over 10 years, Brandon, and our Dachshund mix, Jack. If you’re wondering, we’ve had running water for a while (if you know, you know).

I’ve spent over 17 years in operations management and training, with 10 of those years spent in food service. I use these skills and a love of food to create mouthwatering content and thorough step-by-step guides.

Thanks to the many farms and local food scene in the State, we are able to enjoy fresh vegetables and produce all year in addition to a variety of cuisines. Expect to see this variety throughout my blog.
